Container Pool House Complete with Wet Bar and Rooftop Patio

Minnesota summers can be described in a variety of ways, but of the most common descriptors is ‘short’. Being aware of our limited time, we focus on making the most of the short few months of warm summer weather we get in the North Star State.

There are few better ways to spend that precious time than hanging out with friends and family by the pool. The only way to make it even sweeter is to bring some of the comforts of the inside to the poolside, and that is just what one couple was looking for with their poolside container cabana. 

The pool house started as a full 40’ x 8’ container. This container in particular was special as it was a “High-Cube” container, giving us a full foot and a half more height compared to a standard container. To ensure a proper fit in the space aside the pool, we cut the container down from 40’ to 26’ overall. We also cut in a large opening on the side facing the pool that would ultimately house an insulated garage door, making the indoor/outdoor transition seamless and easy. 

As convenience was a top priority for this unit we added a bathroom and storage area to the back side of the container. No more wet trips inside to grab towels or go to the bathroom. On the other side of the added partition is the wet bar and live edge countertop and bar that is ideal for serving cocktails or an afternoon snack. In addition to cabinetry we added a mini fridge to keep beverages close at hand. The walls were finished with contrasting shiplap to balance the light and airy living area and premium bar. The container is climate controlled with a mini-split unit, capable of both heating and cooling for seasonal comfort.

On the exterior of the container you will find mixed cladding of corrugated walls and natural red cedar. The multiple large windows let light and air flow through the container and a beautiful wrap-around cedar deck creates a perfect transition from pool deck to container. Around the back you will find a custom steel staircase that leads you to the rooftop patio with unique turf flooring and cable railing system. There is even a putting green on the patio to keep your short game tight. A 4’ steel overhang allows you to bring the whole family up top to enjoy the views.
